The Jeanneau NC11 together with the Jeanneau NC37 (and others in the Jeanneau NC range) are one of my favourite styles of power vessels. The open design with the cockpit and living area all on the same level works so well.

These designs are particularly useful for dog owners and those with mobility issues, as there is no requirement to use any steps other than to reach the sleeping cabins and the heads.

There are similar designs, including the Beneteau Gran Turismo range; but in terms of usability and design the Jeanneau is in my opinion hard to beat.

Moisture in the balsa core

These yachts are well built, although a thorough survey is required as the hull and superstructure are all balsa cored, and it is essential to carefully check there is no moisture within the balsa core.

This usually means that a ‘hoist and hold’ survey – where the vessel is held in the slings for an hour or so – can lead to inconclusive moisture readings. This is because any high readings may be due to the surface not drying out properly, resulting in rogue readings.

It is better to bring the vessel ashore for a few days before the survey to ensure the hull is fully dry and the moisture readings are accurate and reliable. Read more about moisture readings and meters.

The pre-purchase/full condition survey inspects the hull, structure, superstructure and all the ancillary items. Its purpose is to establish the overall condition of the vessel in terms of defects, wear and tear, maintenance, and quality of build.

It will also identify and assess any significant past repairs, damage, or other factors in the structure or systems affecting the integrity, safety, or seaworthiness of the vessel.

Engines and sterndrives

The engines and sterndrives are specialist areas that we recommend are evaluated by a qualified marine engineer who will have the necessary diagnostic equipment required.

The engines in the Volvo Penta range for example, require diagnostic software to interrogate the data for service history and any overheating or other issues.

Sterndrives can be a frequent source of cost, as anyone with this set up can testify to!
